Toll roads Austria
In Austria, tolls are mandatory on all motorways (A roads) and expressways (S roads) for vehicles up to 3.5 tons. To drive on these roads, you must have a valid e-vignette, which is linked to your vehicle’s license plate.
Austria’s motorway network is extensive and well maintained, with the A1, A2, A10, and A13 among the country’s key corridors. These roads are also part of the broader European E-road network, meaning you’ll often see dual signage such as A10 (E55) or A2 (E66).
Where is a vignette required?
A valid e-vignette is required for all A and S roads, including:
Motorways (A): A1, A2, A3, A4, A7, A8, A9, A10, A11, A12, A13
Expressways (S): S1, S6, S16, and others
You can easily request your Austrian e-vignette online and receive instant confirmation by email.
Section toll roads
In addition to the e-vignette, six specific motorway sections require a separate toll fee, even for vehicles under 3.5 tons. These are known as section toll routes and typically include tunnels or alpine crossings:
A9 Bosruck Tunnel & Gleinalm Tunnel
A10 Tauern & Katschberg Tunnels
A11 Karawanken Tunnel (to Slovenia)
A13 Brenner Motorway (to Italy)
S16 Arlberg Road Tunnel
You can prepay these tolls online or pay at the location.
Toll-free motorway sections
Some short border sections of Austrian motorways are toll-free. These include:
A1 From the German border (Walserberg) to Salzburg-Nord
A12 From the German border to Kufstein-Süd
A14 From Hörbranz (border area) to Hohenems
On these stretches, no e-vignette is required.
